Introduction to Shoulder MRI

The shoulder is a complex ball-and-socket joint that allows for a wide range of motion. Because of its complexity, it is highly susceptible to injuries and degenerative conditions. A Shoulder MRI is the gold standard for visualizing the intricate soft tissues that other imaging methods, like X-rays, cannot see clearly.

Why Should You Get a Shoulder MRI?

This scan is essential for identifying the root cause of shoulder problems, such as:

  • Rotator cuff tears or tendonitis.
  • Shoulder instability or dislocations.
  • Labral tears (Slap lesions).
  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis).
  • Unexplained shoulder weakness or limited range of motion.

How the Shoulder MRI Works

The scan uses strong magnetic fields to create slices (cross-sections) of the shoulder from multiple angles. This allows our radiologists to see precisely where a tear or inflammation is located. In some cases, a specialist may request an "MR Arthrogram," where a small amount of contrast is injected into the joint to better highlight subtle tears.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Preparing for a shoulder MRI is simple:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes. You may be asked to wear a clinical top to avoid interference from metallic clothing features.
  • Remove all jewelry, as the magnet can attract metallic objects.
  • Inform the clinical team of any previous shoulder surgeries or metal implants (like pins or plates).

What to Expect During the Scan

The procedure takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. You will lie on your back with your shoulder positioned inside a specialized "shoulder coil." This device helps capture the highest quality images. It is important to stay still to ensure the images are sharp and detailed.
