Introduction to Pelvic MRI

A pelvic MRI scan is a non-invasive imaging procedure that produces highly detailed pictures of the bones, organs, and soft tissues located in the pelvic area. This specialized scan is often used to evaluate health issues that are difficult to detect via physical examinations or ultrasound.

What Does a Pelvis Scan Examine?

The structures visualized during a pelvic MRI differ depending on the patient:

  • For Women: Uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix.
  • For Men: Prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
  • For Both: Bladder, rectum, pelvic floor muscles, and pelvic lymph nodes.

Common Reasons for a Pelvic MRI

Your doctor may recommend this scan to investigate:

  • Persistent pelvic pain or pressure.
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding or reproductive issues (e.g., fibroids, endometriosis).
  • Urinary problems or bladder conditions.
  • Suspected tumors or masses in the pelvic organs.
  • Hip joint problems or pelvic fractures.
  • Monitoring known cancers in the pelvic region.

How to Prepare for Your Pelvis MRI

Preparation is generally straightforward:

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing. You may be asked to change into a clinical gown.
  • Depending on the specific area of focus, you might be asked to have a full or empty bladder. Our team will provide clear instructions upon booking.
  • Ensure all jewelry and metallic objects are removed.
  • Inform the technologist if you are pregnant or have any metallic implants.

The Procedure and Experience

The scan typically takes 30 to 50 minutes. You will lie on a motorized table that slides into the scanner. In some cases, a small coil (imaging device) may be placed over your pelvis to enhance image quality. The process is completely painless and safe.
