Introduction to Abdominal MRI

Abdominal MRI is a powerful diagnostic tool used to visualize the organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues in the midsection of the body. It is particularly effective at capturing subtle differences in tissue types, making it superior to other imaging methods for diagnosing complex abdominal conditions.

What Organs are Scanned?

A comprehensive abdominal MRI typically examines:

  • Liver: Detecting tumors, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease.
  • Kidneys: Identifying stones, cysts, or masses.
  • Pancreas: Assessing inflammation (pancreatitis) or growths.
  • Spleen: Evaluating size and potential abnormalities.
  • Adrenal Glands: Checking for hormone-producing tumors.
  • Digestive Tract: Visualizing parts of the stomach and intestines.

Why Should You Get an Abdomen MRI?

This scan is often recommended if you experience:

  • Persistent abdominal or flank pain.
  • Unexplained weight loss or jaundice.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
  • Suspicion of internal bleeding or inflammation.
  • Monitoring of known conditions like Crohn's disease or tumors.

Preparing for Your Scan

To ensure the clearest images:

  • You may be asked to fast (no food or water) for 4 to 6 hours before the scan to ensure the organs are clearly visible.
  • If contrast dye is required, inform us of any kidney issues or allergies.
  • Remove all metal objects and wear the provided clinical gown if necessary.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The scan usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes. You will be asked to hold your breath for short intervals (10-15 seconds) to minimize movement blur caused by breathing. The procedure is painless, and you will be in constant communication with our clinical team.
