Introduction to MRA Scans

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is a non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions related to blood vessels. Unlike traditional angiography, which requires inserting a catheter into the body, MRA uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to provide high-resolution images without surgical intervention.

Why is an MRA Scan Recommended?

Your doctor may recommend an MRA scan if they suspect issues with your blood vessels. Common reasons include:

  • Detecting aneurysms (bulges in blood vessel walls)
  • Identifying narrowing (stenosis) or blockages in the arteries
  • Evaluating the risk of stroke or heart disease
  • Assessing blood supply to a tumor
  • Identifying vascular malformations

What Does the Scan Involve?

The MRA scan uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images. In some cases, a contrast agent (gadolinium) may be injected into a vein to make the blood vessels more visible on the images. This helps the radiologist distinguish between arteries and veins and see potential blockages more clearly.

Preparing for Your MRA Scan

Preparation is similar to a standard MRI:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers or buttons.
  • Remove all jewelry, watches, and piercings.
  • Inform our team if you have any metal implants, such as pacemakers, stents, or cochlear implants.
  • If a contrast agent is required, you may be asked to fast for a few hours prior to the appointment.

The Procedure and Aftercare

The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. You will lie on a padded table that slides into the scanner. It is crucial to remain very still during the imaging process. After the scan, you can immediately return to your normal daily activities. If a contrast dye was used, we recommend drinking plenty of water to help flush it from your system.
