What is a Full Spine MRI?

A Full Spine MRI is a comprehensive examination of the entire spine. Instead of looking at just one segment (like the lower back), this scan captures high-resolution "scout" and detailed images of all 24 vertebrae, the discs between them, the spinal cord, and the emerging nerves. This is often more efficient and provides a more complete picture than scanning segments individually.

Why is a Full Spine Scan Recommended?

This scan is ideal for patients with:

  • Widespread Pain: Pain that extends from the neck down to the lower back.
  • Nerve Compression: Symptoms like numbness, weakness, or tingling in both arms and legs.
  • Postural Issues: Evaluating scoliosis (curvature of the spine) or kyphosis.
  • Myelopathy: Assessing potential compression of the spinal cord itself.
  • Metastatic Screening: Checking for the spread of illness to the spinal column.
  • Chronic Back Conditions: Monitoring degenerative disc disease across the entire spine.

What the Scan Reveals

A Full Spine MRI at MRI Plus provides detailed insights into:

  • Vertebrae: Checking for fractures, alignment issues, or bone abnormalities.
  • Intervertebral Discs: Identifying bulges, herniations, or degeneration.
  • Spinal Cord: Detecting tumors, inflammation, or compression.
  • Nerve Roots: Seeing exactly where a nerve might be "trapped" or pinched.

Preparing for Your Scan

Preparation is simple:

  • Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing.
  • Remove all jewelry and piercings.
  • Inform the clinical team if you have any metal implants (especially spinal rods or cages).
  • No fasting is required.

The Procedure

The scan typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. Because it covers a large area, you will lie on a long table that moves through the scanner in stages. It is crucial to remain very still to ensure clear, high-quality images of the entire spine.

Expert Results

Following your scan, a specialist spinal radiologist will review the images. You will receive a detailed report covering all three sections of your spine, providing a definitive diagnosis and helping you and your healthcare team plan the most effective treatment.
