An IAMS MRI scan focuses on the internal auditory meatus (ear canal) and
the surrounding nerves to investigate hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness.

What is an IAMS MRI Scan?

The Internal Auditory Meatus (IAM) is a bony canal in the skull through which the auditory (hearing) and vestibular (balance) nerves pass. An IAMS MRI scan uses specialized high-resolution sequences to produce thin slices through this area, allowing for a detailed examination of these vital nerves and the inner ear structures.

Why is an IAMS Scan Performed?

A specialist might recommend an IAMS MRI if you are experiencing symptoms related to hearing or balance, such as:

  • Unexplained Hearing Loss: Especially if it affects only one ear (asymmetric hearing loss).
  • Tinnitus: Persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears.
  • Vertigo or Dizziness: Recurrent episodes of feeling lightheaded or like the room is spinning.
  • Facial Weakness or Numbness: Investigating the facial nerve that also passes through the IAM.
  • Acoustic Neuroma Screening: Ruling out benign tumors on the hearing nerve.

How the IAMS MRI Differs from a Brain MRI

While a standard brain MRI examines the overall brain structure, an IAMS scan prioritizes the small, delicate nerves of the inner ear. It often involves thinner image slices and specific sequences designed to highlight fluid-filled canals and nerve pathways within the dense bone of the skull base.

Preparing for Your Scan

Preparation is standard for MRI:

  • Remove all jewelry, hearing aids, and metallic items.
  • Inform the team about any metallic implants, especially inner ear (cochlear) implants, which may not be MRI-compatible.
  • No fasting is typically required unless specified.

Procedure and Reporting

The scan usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. You will lie on your back with your head gently supported in a specialized coil. After the scan, a specialist neuroradiologist will examine the high-resolution images. At MRI Plus, we ensure you receive your detailed clinical report quickly, helping your ENT specialist or GP plan your next steps.
