Brachial Plexus MRI Scan

A Brachial Plexus MRI is a specialized scan used to examine the network
of nerves that sends signals from your spinal cord to your shoulder, arm, and hand.

What is the Brachial Plexus?

The brachial plexus is a complex network of nerves located between the neck and the shoulder. It is responsible for controlling the muscles of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand, as well as providing sensation to the arm. Damage to these nerves can result in significant loss of function or chronic pain.

Why is a Brachial Plexus MRI Performed?

This scan is essential for identifying the source of symptoms that affect the arms and hands, such as:

  • Nerve Injury/Trauma: Often caused by accidents, sports injuries, or falls that stretch or tear the nerves.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Persistent "pins and needles" in the arm or hand.
  • Weakness: Loss of muscle strength or motor control in the arm.
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Compression of the nerves by bones or muscles in the neck area.
  • Nerve Tumors: Evaluating growths such as neuromas or schwannomas.
  • Inflammatory Conditions: Such as Parsonage-Turner syndrome (brachial neuritis).

How the Brachial Plexus MRI Works

Visualizing the brachial plexus is technically challenging because the nerves are small and follow a complex path. At MRI Plus, we use specialized protocols that highlight the nerves against the surrounding muscles and blood vessels. This often involves high-resolution T1 and T2 sequences, and sometimes contrast enhancement to check for inflammation or tumors.

Preparing for Your Scan

Standard MRI preparation applies:

  • Remove all jewelry and metal objects.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Inform the team about any metallic implants or previous neck/shoulder surgeries.

Procedure and Experience

The scan takes approximately 45 minutes. You will lie on your back with your head and shoulders positioned inside a specialized coil. It is essential to remain completely still, as even slight movement can blur the fine details of the nerves.

Expert Reporting

Your images will be analyzed by a specialist neuroradiologist or MSK radiologist with expertise in nerve imaging. We provide a comprehensive report that helps your neurologist or orthopedic surgeon determine the best treatment path, whether it's physical therapy, medication, or surgery.

Location

Our expert clinical team will guide you through the process, with a 1-1 consultation, referral, and digital imaging report included in the price of your scan booking.
